Taidetila XL:n 1-vuotisjuhlanäyttelyssä on esillä tuoreita maalauksia kahdelta nuorelta taiteilijalta, Ilari Hautamäeltä ja Otso-Pekka Suhoselta. Kyseessä on ensimmäinen maalaustaiteeseen keskittyvä näyttely XL:ssä ja sen on kuratoinut Toni Ledentsa.
Näyttelyn taiteilijoita yhdistää abstrakti tyyli ja urbaanin ympäristön vaikutteet. Molempien taiteilijoiden työskentelyssä yhdistyy pedantti tarkkuus ja leikkisä spontaanius. Järjen ja intuition yhdistelmistä on syntynyt kauniita ja energisiä teoksia.
Taiteilijoista:
Otso-Pekka Suhonen opiskelee toista vuotta maalauksen osastolla Kuvataideakatemiassa. Hänelle maalaamisessa tärkeintä on tekoprosessi, jonka kesto ja spontaanius usein määrittelevät teoksen. Jotkut maalauksista voivat kätkeä alleen vuosien työn ja kymmeniä kuvia. Nämä kerrokset luovat olennaisen osan valmiiseen maalaukseen. Suhonen hakee inspiraatiota töihinsä muun muassa kaupungin infrastruktuurista, pintojen rappeutumisesta, arkkitehtuurista ja rautateistä.

The 1-year anniversary exhibition of XL Art Space presents fresh paintings from two young artists, Ilari Hautamäki and Otso-Pekka Suhonen. It is the first exhibition at XL that focuses purely on paintings, curated by Toni Ledentsa.
The artists of the exhibition have in common abstract styles and influences of the urban environment. Both artists combine pedantic precision with playful spontaneity. The confluences of reason and intuition have resulted in beautiful and energetic works.
About the artists:
Ilari Hautamäki is a painter – graduated from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2011 – whose works are abstract, scenic paintings. His work combines free experimentation and precise areas outlined by tape. He finds inspiration from the beauty of nature, northern landscapes and horizons that end up in urban environments, torn down buildings, spray-painted walls, human touches.
Hautamäki is interested in the aesthetics of well made “bad” paintings and humorous approaches to the serious field of abstract painting. The painting process is important and challenging. The energies and moments of success during it are vital for him.
Otso-Pekka Suhonen studies painting at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. For him, the most important thing about painting is the process, the length and spontaneity of which often define the work. Some paintings may contain years of work and tens of images. These layers form an essential part of the final painting. Suhonen seeks inspiration from urban infrastructure, the decay of surfaces, architecture and railways, among other things.

Viidestä videoteoksesta koostuvassa installaatiossa taiteilijat tarkastelevat lihallisuutta osana ristiriitaista todellisuuttamme. The installation consists of five video works, in which the artists address questions of carnality and its presentation as part of our conflicted reality. The work plays with themes of lust and shame. It presents sexuality as a complicated, culturally determined web in which the individual is an object of gaze as well as an active subject. The artists have aspired to understand how gender expectations and pressures and sexual moral norms concerning urge and lust affect our subjectivity.Ala-Ruona’s and Helenius’ visual and audio material reflect upon the notions of sin and sanctification as well as the overflow of bare skin in media imagery. As background material, the artists have used personal ponderings and interviews about the formation of sexual identity with people who have grown up in strictly religious communities. Thanks to: Ilmari Arnkil, Juho Gröndahl, Tuomo Helenius, Suvi Kemppainen, Aksa Korttila, Tapani Lundgren, Amanda Manner, Samuli Saarinen, Anna Tuominen.

In 1997 he graduated from Université Paris 1 and LesGobelins, Ecole de I’image in Paris, and in recent years he hasdeveloped video work at Le Fresnoy, in France (2006) and at KungligaKonsthögskolan, in Stockholm (2007).Mutel’s practice has taken many different forms such as photography, visual art installations, video, set/stage mediums, sculpture, environmental and land art. His interest lies mainly in projects that bridge the gap between visual arts and live stage events and performances. Employing new and experimental technology Mutel focuses on the perception and use of images, memory, body, movement, time, space, energy, tension and force. The exhibition is based on the photographic instant – fixed, frozen, preserved memories – the works are an attempt to set the photograph in motion, to give it depth and volume. In the process, the work becomes a field of inquiry into the science, biology and geology of the image.Photography is treated here as an organic, aqueous, ephemeral, living material. It is handled like a skin, affected by ice, a living memory, a resisting, uncontrollable material, a space of imperceptible movement. Threatened and weakened, destroyed but hyperpreserved, it becomes the raw material of its own evolution and disappearance as it takes part in the thaw of its backing.Mutel has printed the original photographs on liquid emulsion, frozen in ice, and melted down. The photograph itself, by its structure, generates its own destruction. A digital camera has captured, frame by frame, the process of melting.Eric’s website / Ericin verkkosivut: www.ericmutel.comThe exhibition is part of AAVE festival: www.aavefestival.org/ Näyttely on osa AAVE-festivaalia: www.aavefestival.org

Peer-to-Peer Review at XL Art Space, Thursday 29.3.2012, 17-20h.
HIAP’s (Helsinki International Artist Programme) collegial format, Peer-to-Peer Review, will take over XL Art Space on Thursday, March 29, with presentations of three new artistic projects by HIAP artists-in-residence Krišs Salmanis, Anna-Stina Treumund and Antanas Gerlikas. Krišs Salmanis (b. 1977), Latvia, is going to present the fruits of his three-month residency at HIAP Suomenlinna realized in the frame of the Paths Crossing project, which is run by HIAP and supported by the Culture Programme of the European Union: “Since it is a production residency, then that is what I did - produced a new animated loop from a loosely related series of video works called Moving Landscape. It might be characteristic of my work altogether, for I have chosen an unexciting subject, taken it through an exciting process in order to achieve a result that is again rather unexciting.”Anna-Stina Treumund (b. 1982), Estonia, will talk about the project she is currently working on. Her work is about lesbian gaze - if it exists and how to define and visualize it. The project is constructing the missing lesbian herstory of Estonia and of Baltic-German past.Antanas Gerlikas (b. 1978), lives and works in Vilnius, Lithuania. “The main conceptual device of my oeuvre is the revisiting of the concept of a museum by looking at it from the perspective of, on one hand, an artwork, and on another, daily life. For this aim I consider an artwork as a semi-autonomous element dependent on the museum’s discipline - its spatial, temporal and ideological conventions, references, construction of history, etc. For this reason I am also interested in how these conventions are acted out in daily life. With this in mind, my aim is to separate the value of an artwork from an institution (the museum) and to transfer it into some new forms of life.”Beside the artists’ presentations, artist and curator Ilari Laamanen will present Switch – the exhibition currently (until 31.3.) on show at XL Art Space. XL is an experimental art space coordinated by independent curators Toni Ledentsa, Ilari Laamanen, Christine Langinauer and Jenni Nurmenniemi, who will also be present in the event.

SWITCHHeini Aho / Bea Fremderman / Sherwin Rivera Tibayan Kulutamme pakonomaisesti kuvia. Heini Aho (s. 1979, Turku) viimeistelee parhaillaan maisteriopintoja Kuvataideakatemiassa. Bea Fremderman (s. 1988, Kishinov, Moldova) viimeistelee parhaillaan opintojaan School of the Art Institutessa, Chicagossa, jossa hän myös koordinoi voittoa tavoittelemattoman Kunsthalle Newn toimintaa. Fremdermanin töitä on ollut esillä esimerkiksi seuraavissa näyttelyissä: Internet Superheroes (Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art), Shine A Light (Portland Art Museum), Younger Than Jesus (New Museum in New York) ja Take Me In Your Arms And Fuck Me (Preteen Gallery in Mexico). Näyttelyn on kuratoinut Ilari Laamanen. Se on osa hänen opinnäytetyötään Aalto-yliopiston taiteiden ja suunnittelun korkeakoulun Curating, Managing and Mediating Art -maisterikoulutusohjelmaan. During an era of visual excess it might be wise to step back, to withdraw oneself from the loop. Withdrawal does not mean denial of images but taking distance to them. The gesture could serve as a starting point for considering what is the point in constant watching after all. Withdrawal does not mean merely stopping but moreover perpetual movement towards the image and away from it – presence, not nervous glancing.  One should not try to find the maximum amount of content in a work of art or image but instead try to revive the senses when encountering them.It is necessary to slow down and learn how to orientate without an address and a map. Because perhaps one of these days all the lights will be switched off and it will get completely dark. How well can we see in the midst of darkness – or can we see at all? Switch is a group exhibition dealing with distance, temporality and spectating. At the core of the exhibition are the ideas of reduced expression and the rotation of images. It presents works by three artists: Heini Aho, Bea Fremderman and Sherwin Rivera Tibayan. Heini Aho (b. 1979, Turku, Finland) is currently finishing her Master’s studies at the Finnish Academy of Arts in Helsinki. Lately her practice has involved installation, video and performance. Often her spatial constructions open fully to the viewer only when approached from certain angle; the three-dimensional flattens to an image and reveals the narrative hiding underneath. She has participated in various exhibitions in Finland and abroad. In 2009, alongside her residency, Aho took part in a project in which a group of artists and researchers sailed and worked in the Arctic Circle, around Svalbard, for three weeks. Bea Fremderman (b. 1988, Kishinov, Moldova) is currently finishing her studies at School of the Art Institute in Chicago where she lives, produces and is the sole director of Kunsthalle New, a nonprofit gallery space located in Pilsen. Her current research interests are the suburban nightmare, synthetic reality and false notions of freedom. Her exhibition highlights include Internet Superheroes at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Shine A Light at the Portland Art Museum, Younger Than Jesus at the New Museum in New York and Take Me In Your Arms and Fuck Me at Preteen Gallery in Mexico. Sherwin Rivera Tibayan (b. 1982, Subic Bay, Philippines) is a graduate student in photography living in Norman, Oklahoma. His recent projects are influenced by digital culture and its effect on our relationship to the history – and histories – of images. Switch is curated by Ilari Laamanen. Zine launch & Artist talks: Luciana Ohira & Sergio Bonilha + Jane Hughes
Keskiviikkona 8.2. klo 18:30–20:00. / On Wednesday 8.2. at 18:30–20:00.
- Luciana Ohira and Sergio Bonilha (Brazil) -
‘Transimmanence’ is an art project by Luciana Ohira & Sergio Bonilha. In their words “It is a new project we are working on as a way of think about this largely announced “shift on Earth” we are (maybe) about to experience in/from 2012. Three artworks named with titles suggesting transcendental issues but offering three mainly immanent experiences is what we propose in a Spinozian way of mixing feeling and thinking. Does it sound too abstract? Don’t worry! We are going to bring with us one of the artworks, ‘ascesis’, plus pictures from its construction process.”
Born and getting crazy in São Paulo, Brazil, Luciana Ohira (1983) and Sergio Bonilha (1976) have graduated and obtained master degrees side by side at the University of São Paulo. Working together since 2005 they have shown their projects in Brazil and abroad – trying to understand life a little bit better.http://issuu.com/ohira.bonilha/docs/ohira_bonilha_portfolio ** **
- Jane Hughes: Imagining Other Worlds -
Jane Hughes will talk about her exhibition, Imagining Other Worlds, which is currently at XL Art Space (until 25.2.2012).
“The language and narrative of peripheries, forgotten and forbidden areas have been a recurring motif in my work. Much of my source material in my installations originates in these desolate landscapes, banal roadside views, crumbing structures, hidden remnants and peculiar locations. I am in constant pursuit of the unexpected, the sinister, the eerie, the surprising, the beautiful and the perpetual deception of our lived environment.” The exhibition Imagining Other Worlds invites the viewer into a dark enchanted world of obstacles, shaky ground, grainy images, blurry lines, rusty textures, elusive sounds and all the poetics of dirt and grime. For more info visit: www.janehughes.ie.
** Entwined into these artist talks will also be the launch of the Space is the Place zine, developed in collaboration with Ptarmigan, XL Art Space and Kuvataideakatemia (the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts). **
