Peer-to-Peer Review at XL Art Space, Thursday 29.3.2012, 17-20h. HIAP’s (Helsinki International Artist Programme) collegial format, Peer-to-Peer Review, will take over XL Art Space on Thursday, March 29, with presentations of three new artistic projects by HIAP artists-in-residence Krišs Salmanis, Anna-Stina Treumund and Antanas Gerlikas. Krišs Salmanis (b. 1977), Latvia, is going to present the fruits of his three-month residency at HIAP Suomenlinna realized in the frame of the Paths Crossing project, which is run by HIAP and supported by the Culture Programme of the European Union: “Since it is a production residency, then that is what I did - produced a new animated loop from a loosely related series of video works called Moving Landscape. It might be characteristic of my work altogether, for I have chosen an unexciting subject, taken it through an exciting process in order to achieve a result that is again rather unexciting.”Anna-Stina Treumund (b. 1982), Estonia, will talk about the project she is currently working on. Her work is about lesbian gaze - if it exists and how to define and visualize it. The project is constructing the missing lesbian herstory of Estonia and of Baltic-German past.Antanas Gerlikas (b. 1978), lives and works in Vilnius, Lithuania. “The main conceptual device of my oeuvre is the revisiting of the concept of a museum by looking at it from the perspective of, on one hand, an artwork, and on another, daily life. For this aim I consider an artwork as a semi-autonomous element dependent on the museum’s discipline - its spatial, temporal and ideological conventions, references, construction of history, etc. For this reason I am also interested in how these conventions are acted out in daily life. With this in mind, my aim is to separate the value of an artwork from an institution (the museum) and to transfer it into some new forms of life.”Beside the artists’ presentations, artist and curator Ilari Laamanen will present Switch – the exhibition currently (until 31.3.) on show at XL Art Space. Visuaalisen liioittelun aikakaudella saattaa olla mielekästä ottaa askel taaksepäin ja vetäytyä pois luupista. Vetäytyminen ei tarkoita kuvallisuuden kieltämistä, vaan etäisyyden ottamista kuviin. Vetäytyminen voi johtaa pohdintoihin jatkuvan katsomisen mielekkyydestä ylipäänsä. Se ei tarkoita pysähtymistä, pikemmin jatkuvaa liikettä kuvaa kohti ja siitä poispäin – läsnäoloa, ei hermostunutta vilkuilua. Kyse ei ole niinkään teoksen tai kuvan sisällön tyhjentämisestä sanoiksi, vaan aistien elvyttämisestä niitä kohdatessa.On tarpeen hidastaa ja oppia suunnistamaan ilman osoitetta ja karttaa, sillä ehkä eräänä päivänä kaikki valot ja näytöt sammutetaan ja tulee täysin pimeää. Kuinka hyvin näemme pilkkopimeässä – vai näemmekö laisinkaan? Switch on ryhmänäyttely, jossa käsitellään katsomiskokemusta, etäisyyksiä ja ajallisuutta. Näyttelyn keskiössä ovat ajatukset karsitusta ilmaisusta ja kuvien kiertämisestä. Switch esittelee töitä kolmelta taiteilijalta: Heini Aholta, Bea Fremdermanilta ja Sherwin Rivera Tibayanilta. Heini Aho (s. 1979, Turku) viimeistelee parhaillaan maisteriopintoja Kuvataideakatemiassa.  Aho on työskennellyt viime aikoina installaatioiden, videoiden sekä performanssien parissa. Usein tilalliset teokset avautuvat vain tietystä kuvakulmasta eheiksi; kolmiulotteisuus litistyy kuvaksi ja avaa teoksen hämärässä pysytelleen juonen. Hän on ottanut osaa lukuisiin näyttelyihin niin Suomessa kuin ulkomaillakin. Loppuvuodesta 2009 hän osallistui residenssityöskentelynsä ohella taiteilija- ja tutkijavetoiseen The Arctic Circle -purjehdukseen, jossa työryhmä työskenteli kolme viikkoa Huippuvuorten ympäri purjehtien.Bea Fremderman (s. 1988, Kishinov, Moldova) viimeistelee parhaillaan opintojaan School of the Art Institutessa, Chicagossa, jossa hän myös koordinoi voittoa tavoittelemattoman Kunsthalle Newn toimintaa. Fremdermanin viimeaikaisia tutkimuskohteita ovat lähiöhelvetti, synteettinen todellisuus ja valheelliset käsitykset vapaudesta. Fremdermanin töitä on ollut esillä esimerkiksi seuraavissa näyttelyissä: Internet Superheroes (Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art), Shine A Light (Portland Art Museum), Younger Than Jesus (New Museum in New York) ja Take Me In Your Arms And Fuck Me (Preteen Gallery in Mexico). Sherwin Rivera Tibayan (s. 1982, Subic Bay, Filippiinit) on Oklahoman Normanissa asuva ja työskentelevä valokuvataiteen maisteriopiskelija. Hän on keskittynyt viimeaikaisessa työskentelyssään digitaaliseen kulttuuriin sekä sen vaikutuksiin tavassamme käsittää kuvien historiaa – tai historioita. Näyttelyn on kuratoinut Ilari Laamanen. The gesture could serve as a starting point for considering what is the point in constant watching after all. Withdrawal does not mean merely stopping but moreover perpetual movement towards the image and away from it – presence, not nervous glancing.  One should not try to find the maximum amount of content in a work of art or image but instead try to revive the senses when encountering them.It is necessary to slow down and learn how to orientate without an address and a map. Because perhaps one of these days all the lights will be switched off and it will get completely dark. How well can we see in the midst of darkness – or can we see at all? Switch is a group exhibition dealing with distance, temporality and spectating. At the core of the exhibition are the ideas of reduced expression and the rotation of images. It presents works by three artists: Heini Aho, Bea Fremderman and Sherwin Rivera Tibayan. Heini Aho (b. 1979, Turku, Finland) is currently finishing her Master’s studies at the Finnish Academy of Arts in Helsinki. Lately her practice has involved installation, video and performance. Often her spatial constructions open fully to the viewer only when approached from certain angle; the three-dimensional flattens to an image and reveals the narrative hiding underneath. She has participated in various exhibitions in Finland and abroad. In 2009, alongside her residency, Aho took part in a project in which a group of artists and researchers sailed and worked in the Arctic Circle, around Svalbard, for three weeks. Bea Fremderman (b. 1988, Kishinov, Moldova) is currently finishing her studies at School of the Art Institute in Chicago where she lives, produces and is the sole director of Kunsthalle New, a nonprofit gallery space located in Pilsen. Her current research interests are the suburban nightmare, synthetic reality and false notions of freedom. Her exhibition highlights include Internet Superheroes at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Shine A Light at the Portland Art Museum, Younger Than Jesus at the New Museum in New York and Take Me In Your Arms and Fuck Me at Preteen Gallery in Mexico. Kulutamme pakonomaisesti kuvia. Visuaalisen liioittelun aikakaudella saattaa olla mielekästä ottaa askel taaksepäin ja vetäytyä pois luupista. Vetäytyminen ei tarkoita kuvallisuuden kieltämistä, vaan etäisyyden ottamista kuviin. Vetäytyminen voi johtaa pohdintoihin jatkuvan katsomisen mielekkyydestä ylipäänsä. Se ei tarkoita pysähtymistä, pikemmin jatkuvaa liikettä kuvaa kohti ja siitä poispäin – läsnäoloa, ei hermostunutta vilkuilua. Kyse ei ole niinkään teoksen tai kuvan sisällön tyhjentämisestä sanoiksi, vaan aistien elvyttämisestä niitä kohdatessa.

On tarpeen hidastaa ja oppia suunnistamaan ilman osoitetta ja karttaa, sillä ehkä eräänä päivänä kaikki valot ja näytöt sammutetaan ja tulee täysin pimeää. Kuinka hyvin näemme pilkkopimeässä – vai näemmekö laisinkaan?

Switch on ryhmänäyttely, jossa käsitellään katsomiskokemusta, etäisyyksiä ja ajallisuutta. Näyttelyn keskiössä ovat ajatukset karsitusta ilmaisusta ja kuvien kiertämisestä. Switch esittelee töitä kolmelta taiteilijalta: Heini Aholta, Bea Fremdermanilta ja Sherwin Rivera Tibayanilta.

Heini Aho (s. 1979, Turku) viimeistelee parhaillaan maisteriopintoja Kuvataideakatemiassa.  Aho on työskennellyt viime aikoina installaatioiden, videoiden sekä performanssien parissa. Usein tilalliset teokset avautuvat vain tietystä kuvakulmasta eheiksi; kolmiulotteisuus litistyy kuvaksi ja avaa teoksen hämärässä pysytelleen juonen. Hän on ottanut osaa lukuisiin näyttelyihin niin Suomessa kuin ulkomaillakin. Loppuvuodesta 2009 hän osallistui residenssityöskentelynsä ohella taiteilija- ja tutkijavetoiseen The Arctic Circle -purjehdukseen, jossa työryhmä työskenteli kolme viikkoa Huippuvuorten ympäri purjehtien.

We are obsessed with consuming images. During an era of visual excess it might be wise to step back, to withdraw oneself from the loop. Withdrawal does not mean denial of images but taking distance to them. The gesture could serve as a starting point for considering what is the point in constant watching after all. Withdrawal does not mean merely stopping but moreover perpetual movement towards the image and away from it – presence, not nervous glancing.  One should not try to find the maximum amount of content in a work of art or image but instead try to revive the senses when encountering them.

It is necessary to slow down and learn how to orientate without an address and a map. Because perhaps one of these days all the lights will be switched off and it will get completely dark. How well can we see in the midst of darkness – or can we see at all? Switch is a group exhibition dealing with distance, temporality and spectating. At the core of the exhibition are the ideas of reduced expression and the rotation of images. It presents works by three artists: Heini Aho, Bea Fremderman and Sherwin Rivera Tibayan.
